My "wildthing"

v8manic replied the topic: RE: My "wildthing"

Have finally after all this time gotten the boat on the water for it's maiden run. Still haven't painted it or finished the fiberglass deck mould so it has a cedar ply deck at moment which this one will probably live with till i build a new shell.
I have a problem that the boat is torque rolling and cause of this i can't turn it to the left unless it's not moving any ideas on how to fix this?
also i seem to have killed my servo already and it was suppose to be a high torgue servo from hi-tec.

couple of quick pic's have more that i will post from as the build progressed.

Do you have trim tabs on the boat? On most monos you can help conteract torque roll by running the inner right (starboard) side trim tab a little bit deeper. Post a few pictures of the hardware setup if you can. Video would help too if you can.

Torque roll is common on monos and is often hard to totally get rid of. As Marc said lowering your right trim tab a little will help. I offset my drive about 1/4 inch to the right to help counter torque steer and roll. How sharp is your prop? A dull prop can contribute to the roll. It may also be that you're just not using the best prop for your application. You could also try adding some weight to the left side of the boat. Do you have any pics of the stern of the boat showing your hardware setup? What model is the Hitech servo you are using that has died? Doug

Well finally got this bad girl out again this weekend for another run and didn't get more than 30sec's on the water when i rolled it and sank it doing a high speed right turn. It doesn't seem to want to turn left real easy and when i turned right i spun out. I'm thinking i may need to put either some turn fins on or add some strakes.
What do you guys think?

Spinning out turning right could be due to several things

- too much weight forward (where is your center of gravity, should be between 30 - 34% from transom, depending on power plant)

- too much lift in the prop

- rudder kicked back & not perpendicular to the keel

- hook in the hull

Don't think i have any hook in the hull as i spent a long time making sure the plug was straight before making the mould. I did have the drive set all the way up when i took it out for a run as i had just chenged to the stinger drive. Have never actually check the cog when i built this boat as i was new to it all.
I'll go have a look at a few things right now and get back to you in a few minutes.

just checked boat out cog is set at 30.3%. Just had a quick thought that my rudder was set in the furest out arm point of the servo and could be like turning a break on at full speed cause it to spin.
Guess i shall put the turn fin's on and change the servo point of pull and see what happens from there on.

You don't need much travel on the rudder at speed. How far does the rudder turn? What radio and servos are you using? What prop are you running? Any pics of the boat, especially the transom and hardware? Doug
