My "wildthing"

v8manic replied the topic: Re:My "wildthing"

Got the new gelcoat yesterday and got it laid down aswell as one layer or "tissue" cloth, this is a very very fine chopstrand style matting. so far today i have laid down another layer or "tissue" and one layer of 450g choppy. Will be laying down tomorrow morning after work another 3 layers of this same cloth aswell as a layer of core mat which is like a very thick material like mat that give thickness and strength. Followed by another 2 layers of choppy.
Hopefully once this is cured i can cut out a couple of legs to glass onto the bottom of the mould so it still when i actually lay up a hull into it.
Anyway here's a couple of pictures after the tooling gelcoat was applied, will try and get a couple more later of the lay up process.
By the way the gelcoat was just brushed on and let take off and then applied another coat, all up about 3 layers where applied maybe more.

Cheers Wade.

P.S. Currently waiting on Aus post to deliver all my external hardware for this boat.

Just a heads up never leave gelcoat out in the sun to go off or it will spider crack or worse, you must do it indoors not in direct sunlight it doesnt like ultraviolet light when curing.I asually do 2 layers of mat at a time one after the other that way you save time and resin ;) .I dont use surface tissue either i normally split the matt to get some thin layers and use that on the first layer only. When you add the legs use a vee shape and i use strips of carpet or corematt under the wood so you dont get any distortion of the mould where the legs are.

Didn't actually leave the gelcoat in the sun to dry but moved from inside the garage where it was freezing cold out to where there was a bit more heat. i usually try and do asmany layers aswell but forgot how much of a pain that tissue cloth was to work with. My resin was going off by the time i got the first layer all down.
Thanks for the advice on the legs never though it would affect the mould but you never can tell.

No problem Wade just had the problem of gelcoat wrinkling etc when i put it out in the sun as it was cold and found out the hard way :( :( .The tip on the legs was told to me by an experienced mould maker so i just followed his advise.Your doing a great job have you checked out the dreaming cs build threads on rcu? its the same boat as yours.

Finally got some time to myself last night and got the final layer on the outside of the mould. Final count of matt was 2 of tissue 4 of 450gsm choppy, 1 layer core matt, then a final 1 of 450gsm choppy.
Missus told me she wanted to spend time with me last night so i told her she had to come help me in the garage do some glassing, which suprisingly she accepted and came help me.
Anyway hope to pull the mould off tommorrow or maybe monday and see how it all looks.

Couple pic's how it looked before i trimmed it up.

I don't get on here as often as I should obviously, I haven't seen this thread before. If the plans are printed out correctly the boat should actually be about 48 5/8" long. A lot of people call this boat the Wildthing, but that's not correct. The Wildthing was a .21 mono designed by John Finch who knows a lot more than I will ever know about boat design. I did make it look a lot like the Wildthing just because I liked the look, but it's not just a scaled up Wildthing. Doug

That's a really cool project...I really wish I had the time to do one myself someday...have always wanted to make my own boats!
