Building has begun!!

Ccat created the topic: Building has begun!!

After an extreemly long delay tooling is complete and test parts have been built and evaluated...Now I can comfortably build the toys! My goal here is two-fold.First to introduce a new large cat to the hobby, at a budget price with custom potential. Which can be done by me in laminate schuedule (i.e. carbon-hybrids-aluminized f/g) or purchased and done by consumer. Second I'm curious to know if there is a few select people who are willing to purchase the boats, rigg & run it, and possibly give reviews on performance. This is the end of the hobby I just can't afford right now on a carpenters salery. Set aside the plea I would like to see one running even if I'm not operating it. My experience revolves around 10-15 years of building, rigging, and testing full scale offshore cats from 21 to 48 ft. All of which was translated into my 84 in.x 24 in. cat. There is room for q-draw quads in the sponsons (not recomended) but they are cavernous 6in. wide x 9in. tall to the deck. Vents in the hatch are cut out by me. And the hatch is built over by the deck ( gives perfect fit every time). The transom will accept top secret style hardware as well as mh$ trimax drives or the hpr stuff too. Hull and deck are glassed in mold and capped with glass and gelcoat for the seamless look. I hope to hear from some of you regarding my plan And would appreciate any thoughts or criticism. Thank you, Chris Koch,

The pics are of the plug.

Sounds like a doozie! What would you power this monster with for some worthy performance?
I'm thinking couple big blocks?

I have worked on a 84 mono for a friend and I had to add a lot of bracing and stiffeners to it. What are you doing with bulk heads and stringers and bracing internally? When a 7 footer blows off it's gonna hit pretty hard every time.

For bulkheads I'm using caulking rope covered in glass to build ring style bulkheads with minimum weight and no wood. Top secret hardware is almost scale to real life zf-trimax drives, thier basic by design and only about 14-15 in. tall, the shafts are monsters @2.5\" in dia. and really, really heavy. The cat has a low deadrise sponson with sharp strakes, I left out pads on the sponsons because of this. I also veered away from traditional strakes by putting a fillet on the outside edge to lift the out-bound sponson in turns. Should be a respectable performer with stock zen'z (deadrise) and carry itself well in the ruff due to size. I've also decide to go with carbon fiber sister bulkheads for engine mounting (akin to hpr installations). I'm stalling now for weather I'ts @50 here now I want to make sure gel is good before laminating, may even switch to white transtar poly-primer for future builds in the winter months.Transtar works like gel but has a pot life of 3 hours and cures to sand in 1-1/2 hrs. at 70 deg. 125 a gallon though. I'll post some more pics soon. Thanks for the buzz it keeps me hyped about the project!

Pricing for hull and deck with radio box, and hull and deck capped (body worked smooth) will end up just short of 500. less shipping. Shop around this is cheap. Preliminary pricing(read ruff estimate) on complete less radio is near 1600.00. The later includes props, top secret drives & rudder, flex cables, stock 231's, exaust, fuel tanks, all plumming, and controls ready to hook up to servos. Essentially rtr stripped of radio.

I would like to see you build one thats half scale of the big one like a 48 inch version.Something that huge is very limited to those who can afford that style of boat. The smaller version would be nice for the average budget. You kinda know as you cant afford the testing also.

I have a 54in. cat in the design stages, drawn and waiting to be built. With style influences from (search) alfa-z, with I guess a blend of daytona prototype and F1. Seems there isnt a flat section on this one.I set it up to run single motors or inlines with a #6 hovering in the tunnel, but any hardware will work. If I can get a decent pic off of the drawing I'll post it. I knew the market for the big cat would be limited... I just can't help myself sometimes.
