New Build

BrandonC created the topic: New Build

Hi Guys,

As some of you know I've been planning a new boat. It will be built out of wood (1/4" ply and door skins). Not sure what engine will be in it finally but for now it will be run with my Zenoah G26 out of my other boat. Chance are though by the time its finished I will have sourced another engine for it.

It will have a stinger drive at the back (not in the pics) and two rudders as you can see.

Dimensions are 1422mm (56") long, the center hull is 254mm (10") wide, 203mm (8")deep.

The pontoons are 600mm long by 60mm wide and will be joined to the main hull by alluminium struts.

The "ears" on the cowling after consideration will not be included :( as they will be too difficult to make (identically) and have no real purpose (had thought I would use then for air inlets). But they look kinda cool! :( :(

Other than that the pics of the finished side and top down views are below. More will be added in the next few days. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

All the best,

Brandon.

Hi Brandon.

Now thats a true beauty with great lines! Congrats!
My experience is that beautiful design allways works better. This goes for anything: Cars, planes and boats.
I wonder if others can see where you got your inspiration from? I know it, and it's not Flash Gordons spaceship. ;)
I look forward to follow your build.

Cheers! :cheer:

Woodie,

Thanks!!! :woohoo: I've just looked at the bottom picture and it looks a bit like the starship Enterprise!!

But if the others are wondering where I got the inspiration...THE "EARS" should give it away!! :cheer:

All the best,

Brandon.

I think it looks Batman"ish"... I like it. Will be interesting to see it develop into a real boat and even more so to see it run! Good luck with the project. I'll be watching! :)

I see that nobody so far has revealed Brandons inspiration to this revolutionary design.
Ask yourself how to design a boat, that runs really fast on calm water.
Also ask yourself what boat also runs fast in high waves - NOT by jumping up and down across the chop - but by submerging right through the top of the waves
Enough leads for now.

The short story is that the boats original name was "Earthrace". She was set up to do the speed record around the World, and I think she did so - running on biodiesel.
After that she was sold to the Sea Shepherd organisation and was painted black and named "Adi Gil".
During a mission for Sea Shepherd, she collided with a whaler and sank.
Here's a presentation vid showing her ind the original colours, and showing the princip of her wave-piercing action.

It is truly a challenge to build a MGB with hydrodynamics like the "Earthrace".
I wish Brandon all the best in doing so.
Sorry to say I did'nt get that idea before he did. (Will there ever be room for a number two)?

Cheers! :cheer:

I hope that you treat your model better than the idiot (Betune)that made Earthrace treated her. I got to go on her before the 1st aborted voyage. Out of Panama she hit a fishing boat at night and killed a crew member. Broke a few props, seem to remember it threw blades from time to time. 1st voyage aborted.
2nd voyage went much better, and they were the first boat to go around the world on biodesiel. Betune sold Earthrace to Sea Shepherd, and remained captain. We all know the rules of the sea. Small give way to LARGE. He didn't and a beatuiful boat was sunk for nothing. A boat like that should never have been in the southern ocean tackling whale ships.

Good luck on your build. She should go well, and will look beaut zooming along with a G260 powering her. Anyway to convert the motor to diesel to be more authentic?? That would be different.
