My smokin' Cigarette.

Woodie replied the topic: Re: My smokin' Cigarette.

After a period with a lot of challenges sketching out the new aluminium rails, I am just about ready now. I have dropped the blacksmith, and found a CNC guy to do the job. Price unknown so far.
He will get the drawings this week, and I expect to get a pair of flashy tailormade rails some day next week.

Meanwhile here's a pic from my third and final attempt in the drawing process:

Pics of the finished rails will follow.

Cheers! :cheer:

Back again.

But not very victorious - so far.
The CNC guy saw my drawings and sent me back home to redo details :(
Actually that was my luck as I discovered som bad faults on the drawings.
So here we go again. The 5.th layout is on the drawing board right now.
I expect to deliver the corrected drawings for CNC cutting early next week.
(Be patient with me. This project is build up from scratch, and mistakes are no option. Time is on my side) :P
When these rails are done, I can finally get on with the woodworks that I love the most, and leave the damn machinery and electronics to my son. :)

As promised: Pics will follow.

Cheers! :cheer:

First of all thanks to the many folks, that have wiewed my thread. More than 12.000 wiews now. I am impressed and thankful for that.

It's been 4 weeks since I updated this thread. Nothing much has happened since then. Partly because the "CNC-guy" I found has admitted to be more guy than CNC...
But also due to a personal problem about getting up and go.

Well. I'm at it again. The sixth (!) and perfected drawing of the aluminium engine rails is finished now, and I have found a new and pro "CNC-guy", who tells me that he can do the job from pencil drawings within a day or two - and with no hassle. Maybe even before easter.
If the price is right, I will put his company name on my boat as a sort of mutual sponsorship.

As I said before  :
Pics will follow.
Happy easter and thanks to ya all for support and help.

Cheers! :cheer:

BIG showdown!

The CNC-guy gave me the impression that he could make the engine rails for a price equal to 3-400 USD.
After he saw the drawings, he changed his mind, and the price changed. Now it's equal to 1.200 USD (!). That really is the same as saying that he wants me off his back...
And so it will be. :(

So I'm set back to "start". Probably I will order some aluminium and do it myself using jigsaw, file and drill. Depending on my skills, the result will be "less CNC looking"

Will pics follow? Yeah - some day.

Anyway, the sun is shining here!
So cheers to ya all! :cheer:

Hi Woodie sounds like you,ve been round the block and are back at square one and still no engine rails, bite the bullet and dive in and get it done yourself.Looking forward to the finished boat and seeing how this smokin'Cigarette performs
good luck Darren

Hi Darren.

Yes I'm back to square one and all ready to make these (beautiful) rails by hand. (You really should see them) :)
But my son, who made my design ready for CNC by transferring it to SolidWorks, asks me to wait a little more: Now he will send the drawings to all CNC-producers in Denmark and ask for biddings.
Who knows? Someone may come up with a reasonable price? I give it one more chance.

Cheers! :cheer:

Hi Woody,
It looks like you have been given the royal run a round (nice way to put it). It is ashame that you have been stuffed up so much, I have been patiently checking on the progress of your build and I tell you I would not be so easy on those guys.  as you.
As for giving mutual sponsorship with some form of signwriting on your boat, just be careful. I used to race motor cycles (road racing) many, many, many (gee thats a lot of manys isn't it  :woohoo:  ) moons ago and everyone wants to put their brand or name on your machine BUT they do not want to help you, either financially, discounts or freebies. They just want to use you for their signage.
And when you ask them for something either products or help or tuning they treat you like a lepper. I know this is really nothing with the little boats but it can turn out the same. I have seen guys with signage on their machines and something has happened and the poor guy can end up being sued, if you do have any signage pertaining to some one besides yourself, put something in writing. This is good advice and it's free :woohoo:.

Hi Woodie

I’ve just been looking at this fantastic topic and the fascinating threads.

I absolutely love the attention to detail that comes through from you in all aspects.

It will be fantastic to see the eventual boat finished and in action on the water.

After all of the hard work your very first run will be an exciting if not a totally nerve wracking experience!Hi Woodie

Darren, Moofy and Craig.

Thanks for supporting me in this "hopeless" project. B)
My son (the marine engineer, U know) is pushing some buttons now, hoping to get the special designed engine rails made for a reasonable price.
I will send update about this.

Cheers & thanks! :cheer:

Hi Woodie,
I know it is frustrating going out to the workshop and seeing your pride and joy just sitting there with no additions. :( :( I have bee closely watching this build since day one and I am feeling I know this boat so well and yet I have not even seen it in the flesh (or in this case in the wood, I hope that that does not sound too rude) :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: . I hope you can finish it up soon ( at least before the end of this milennium) :silly: So Woodie just letting you know we are feeling your frustrations as well. Keep at it.
Graeme. :)
