Hi Isuzu.
I think I can answer your question. The gap creates bubbels of air = lift = less friction = higher speed.
You can see about the same at the XXX-Muscle shown on top of www.mhzusa.com - just enlarge the pic, though these runners on the XXX are smaller.
Actually I consider doing the same on my mono, If only I could get some better pics of this XXX to follow.

Yeah lift and less water contact, a lot of the flat bottom/mono drag boats have runners on the underside. It is supposed to also make them more stable at speed although they usually dont have the gaps my runners have.
I basically have to give the whole hull a sand to smooth out the glass for painting now.

Well I had to get some colour on it for him.
Still need to sand it back again for another coat before clearcoat and finish off the top but its all there.(Although a bit rough) :laugh:
