Classic Thunderboats

Steve Seebold created the topic: Classic Thunderboats

I have seen pictures of several "CLASSIC THUNDERBOATS" on this site. Most are great looking, but one disturbs me more than just a little.

The rules state that the boat must have the appearance of a "CLASSIC" THUNDERBOAT, but the new boat from Insane looks more like a 7 litre limited hydro than it does a "CLASSIC" THUNDERBOAT.

WOW, talk about pushung the rules.

Maybe there should be a minimum weight requirement as well.

I think that's why the gas Scale class started up. The Thunderboats kinda got away from the original "Spirit" of the class. I personally think some of them look pretty goofy. But the rules allowed it and that's fine. All the manufacturers are building within the rules. What's funny is up here in the NW ALL the Thunderboats look like the original boats. My Spokane is a wood boat that weighs a lot more than some of the others but I still did better than them, so weight doesn't seem to matter much.

Gents,

To address the weight issue. My RCBoat Co. T-Boat is 17 1/2#. One of my buddies Blazer Lauterbach came in at 17#. There are four Insane T-Boats (version 2)in town. They range between 20 & 21 pounds. The Insane boats are smaller in cross section if you look at them from the front. I feel that and a pretty good hull design account for any extra speed.
AND you still have to drive them.

The issue of being within the rules is a sore spot for me. We had a full scale circle track car. Because of a lot of hard work, it was really fast. The governing body changed the rules to penalize JUST us many times. We would go back to the drawing board/dyno and get the speed back. Ended up with just our two cars being banned forever.
No cheating, following all of the rules, and we were banned.

Keno's take on this is right on. Gas scale is great if you want to race a scale T-Boat.
I like the T-Boats with stock engines.
At least we have a choice.

Scale is a different idea. The class I am talking about here is "CLASSIC" thunderboat. The Insane boat doesn't look anything like a "CLASSIC" thunderboat.

I'm sorry Steve. I don't understand your statement. Do the classic boats have any exact rules about how they have to look. I will look again and see if I have missed anything.

Doug,

I remember when the Classic Thunderboat class was first discussed. The idea than was to have boats that looked like the thunderboats of the 1950's and 60's.

That new boat from Insane bears absolutely no resemblance to a boat from the 50's or 60's. It looks more like a limited class 7 litre hydro than it does a "CLASSIC THUNDREBOAT".

Steve I just don't see your point. If the Insane boat should not be allowed then do you also leave out the Blazer Lauterbach. I think the intent of the class was to let people get into a class that runs the same motor, has the same approx dimensions and style of hull. They are all fairly competitive if set up properly and driven well. I just don't understand the weight issue that you brought up either. If someone can put together a hull that is lighter than another good for him. With the amount of air the round nosers catch weight is a bonus sometimes to keep them on the water. I personally love the class and ran an Insane gen 1. It flew a lot. Another member has the Insane T2 that you are talking about and he got soundly beaten by home made hulls. fast boat but could not keep it on the water when it got even slightly rough so in my opinion it all balances out.

It's not worth arguing about. That's my opinion, and you're not going to change my mind. PERIOD. The insane boat DOES NOT look like a Classic Thunder Boat. It looks more like a 7 litre hydro.
