This is a super cheap and quick project that i did with my 9 year old son. Its made out of quarter inch think insulation foam, hot glue and some electric airplane parts.
What kid doesn't like to gob hot glue on stuff. Plus it gave him a reason to turn off the xbox. its powered with 2 6 cell 7.2 battery packs a speed controller from an airplane and a motor out of a old cordless drill. It has a rudder in the water right now but may some time go with air rudders so we can run it on the now frozen ponds. He has a blast with it. Its 24 inches long and 10 inches wide.
he has a lot of fun with it. Now we are looking forward to building a prowler.

First off...WELCOME ABOARD!!!!! That's a good job ya did there!!! It's cool that you did it together, My youngest son and I are going to do a joint project when I finish my Killer Kat!!! He bought himself a Tmaxx the other day, so we run trucks together now until we can get on to our boat build!!!

Goesman.
Thats the way to go! Just involve your son in a lot of exiting mechanics and electronics.
I did the same years ago, and look at me now! Happy as never before!
I'm a learned boatbuilder, and my son has become a genuine marine engineer (I am SO proud!) And right now we work together on our MGB project, "My Smokin' Cigarette". I build the boat, and he sets up the machinery.
Just go for that yourself. It never can be better!
