motor mounting question

goesman created the topic: motor mounting question

Hello every one, i am a new guy to this site and i have a couple of questions.

First off i am not entirely new to boats, i had a very nice out rigger at one time that was hand built by a very good racer. It had if i remember right a OPS 41 that was so hopped up that i could never get it to run right. Way to much for the first timer. I ran that boat once the entire time i had it. Story was that it would run a 110mph across the water if you knew how to tune it. I ended up trading it for a helicopter that was a crash and burn. I also had a traxxis villain that was a blast to play with. Recently my 9 year old son and i built a real simple air boat out of quarter inch think foam insulation, a hot glue gun, and some electric airplane parts. Oh yeah those parts came off another crash and burn, seems to me i need to stay out of the sky. Any way the boat i built with my son was a fun project and a great chance to get his nose out of the xbox and in the shop with me. we had so much fun building that air boat together we are looking to go for bigger and better.
Our next project is the prowler that we found the designs for on this site. I have a echo GT 200r 21.2cc motor for the power plant.

Any way my first question came up as i was sitting here trying to figure out how i am going to make some mounts for this motor. Does the angle that the motor sets at determined by how the motor is made or how the stuffing tube is installed or just a mix of the 2. And how do you determine just how far forward or how far back in the hull that the motor is mounted.

Thanks for any help,
Dan

Yes motor angle and hull type somewhat dictate ideal angle motor should be mounted ... engine used can either work well or fight this equation

CG ( center of gravity ) has % ranges pending hulls style/size and available horse power one plans on using.

Hi Goesman, and welcome aboard this fine forum!

Sorry to hear about your crash & burns. Boating is a bit easier, as long as you avoid joining the fishes at the bottom of the pond.

About placing the engine, you will get as many answers as there is boaters here.
A main rule is to place the center of the engine at Center of Gravity. This is in most cases about 30 - 35 % from the aft stern.
But still. A light and fast engine could be placed more forward, as a heavy and slow engine should be placed more towards the back. (In my opinion that is).
Remember the risk of overplaning, which makes the front of the boat starts dipping because of too much forward weight. You can never correct this with trimtabs or anything else. So if you are in doubt, you should place the engine a bit more towards the aft.
By doing that, you can save the day by trimming the boat aft upwards with a couple of trim tabs.
This really is no science, unless you want to compete against the fastest in this game.

But why not bring a pic of your boat?
I would like to see it!

Merry Christmas! :cheer:

Woodie. :)
