RE: My hardest wood project to date!

Not boat related, but thought I would share...

I'm pretty proud of this one! After suffering water damage to our basement this summer, I had to redo the entire basement and this project was tagged on.

I made these hardwood stairs from start to finish. A local guy had sawed some wood for me. I planed, laminated and build the stairs entirely of yellow birch and maple that I got from him in 1-1/4" rough planks. The threads and risers are all yellow birch and the nosing are stained maple. Finished thickness of treads is 1", risers 3/4" and nosing 2". Took a few months on and off to get the job done. Turned out pretty good if I must say so myself!

Looks great Marc. Here's my latest project. Started out with rough sawn red oak.

Wow! That's beautiful, great work! My father made some similar to that, a lot of work involved in a piece like that!

For my next project, I'm thinking of replacing my house's main entry door with one I make from oak or maple. Want to remove the lights from the old door as well as the two side ones and put them in the new door that I make. Just not sure what to do with the existing frame...I think I will have to redo the entire thing, since it's white alum capped and that wouldn't look too good with the wood doors...I will have to try and educate myself a bit more on this before I take on the project, but I've seen houses similar to ours (stone) with the oak doors and they were just fabulous! I want to give it a shot I think. :)

Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like a great project. I agree, I think you should redo the frame also to make it look right. One thing to think about, the sun does bad things to a varnished finish. You will probably be sanding and refinishing every year or 2 if it's exposed to the sun. You might want to look into what kind of finish will stand up to the sun the best. Doug

Good points, and yes, I've had some bad experience with some outdoor wood projects. Will research to try and find what could be best. The good thing is that the entrance is recessed about 3 feet behind the outside of the house, so it's well protected from the elements. As for the sun, the door is to the east, so only gets sun mornings, so that will help some too. I do realize it will be a lifetime maintenance contract though! :)

Exellent work, but uh,ya still gotta walk all over'em right? I' nearly done with my 85 plus year old colonial. A lot of WIDE moldings and crown that was previously rolled with paint, not good. I can directly appreciated the labor involved in your stairs.

HI,,,MY NAME IS CHRIS AND I HAVE A BOAT BUILDING PROBLEM.
