In line or offset rudder

Malikmx created the topic: In line or offset rudder

Hi to every one, have some problemes with my boat, and wondering if there´s a real difference using the offset ruder, because now i set in line to 6" of the transom in a 45" Deep V and have semo control problems to go straight after turn rigth is keep on turn.

Must say that all is home made.

Any idea to start with?

The bend in the linkage is most likely the problem from what I can see there. I would move the rudder to be inline with the right stringer and re-do the linkage to be straight from the servo to the rudder horn. (move the rudder horn on the left side of the rudder). If you absolutely must keep the rudder in the center like that, you WILL have to make the linkage MUCH stiffer. :)

I would say yes. Theory is that rudder in prop thrust can make is unstable. There are many theories on this. In my opinion, center rudder is ok for a play boat, but for racing with a mono, rudder on starboard (right) side is the way to go.

The bracket is long enough...could probably be stiffer also. Trust us, install it on the Right and it will be much better. Straighten out the linkage also. :) Looks at the Outerlimits XXX review for an idea of how the setup could look. www.modelgasboats.com/Magazine...uterlimits.html

What size rod is that?. It should be at least 4-40. It does look weak and as Marc stated should be as straight as possible.. I also recommmend putting the rudder on the right also. Your doing a good job though dont get discourage I love seeing the guy that puts hard work into his boat and has the desire to make it better. Good job. Tom:)

Instead of moving the rudder in line with the servo, try moving the servo in line with the rudder. If you intend to race in a off shore class, the inline rudder would keep it deeper when you make left turns.
