What boat to build?

TNT Teen created the topic: What boat to build?

Im planning on making a weed eater rc boat over the winter. Id like to use either the Prowler or 48" deep vee. What hull is better, if theres any difference between them? Also, has anyone put chines on one of these boats?

There are differences between the 2 boats. The prowler is 2 inches narrower and there is a minor difference in the bottom. I would use the 48" vee if you're going to use a weed eater motor. I'm not sure what you mean by chines. All boats have chines. The chine is just the line where the bottom meets the sides. If you mean strakes, yes it's been done. Personally I don't think they're necessary on this boat, but if the boat turns out heavy they may provide some extra lift. Doug

I guess I do mean Strakes, I race vee hull speed boats, so I'm not familiar with rc talk. I though it would need strakes for some extra lift. I was also leaning more towards the 48" vee, it just looks a little better.
Hopefully Ill get some build pictures up soon.

Thanks for showing the zipkits boat, I already have the plans printed out for the 48 deep vee. I was at my local hobby store today, they didnt have any balsa to make the boat. What woods are people using for these, and where do you get it? Also, where do you get parts for the rudder, outdrive, and other parts like that? I was told I'd have to order online, so are there any good sites you guys use?

AS far as I know all wood boats are made from plywood. Bulkheads are usually 1/8" and the skins are 1/16". Here is a good web site that I use.

Did you notice Joe's hardware prices.

I use 3/16" birch plywood for the internal structure and 1/8" luan plywood for the outer skin. Zippkits also sells pretty nice hardware for very reasonable prices. Doug

Can i get those woods at a regular Home Depot or a similar hardware store, I went to a hobby store near my house and they didn't have any wood.

Home improvement stores usally don't carry thin hi-grade aircraft type plywoods. Unfortunately a lot of hobby shops are stocked up for "ready to run" guys and not for builders. :( . You should try another shop in your area if possible. Birch and Maple are what I have used. Birch in my opinion is easier to work with.
