New 49" design for Naviga Class Offshore 27cc

marc w created the topic: New 49" design for Naviga Class Offshore 27cc

After some carefull thought and preperation, i decided to design a new hull for the new Naviga class FSR O27.
I did not like the shape of the hulls already available; either not performing or just plain ugly. On the basis of a known 45 inch hull and with the permission of it's original builder/designer, i digitised the hull and increased it's size to 49x14 inches. Just about right to fill the gap between the 45 and 55inch hulls. Project name; Commander (as the Lancer 55 also a Chris Craft type). Easy acces with a big cowl opening (and also easier to laminate the wet-in-wet deck/hull seam). The plug, built up in wood/balsa/foam, is now laminated and the finishing has started; "filler-on-filler-off". The cowl is still in development.

Hi, thanks. The top (deck) is made of styrofoam (high density foam) and some balsa-ribs for reference. The trick is to get the same density/hardness in materials when sanding. Styrofoam and balsa go very well together. If you sand them you take away equal amounts. If the wood is to hard, you get big dents in the foam when sanding.

After a good laminate with epoxy/fibreglass the whole plug is very strong. Before that, you really have to be carefull not to dent/scratch the virgin plug.

@The Kid, nice design. I see some similarities for the cowl. Must be a thelepathic! :P

Progress on the molds. In the pictures you see the partingboard and layup of the molds for the hull and the cowl. In the meantime the plugs have been taken out of the molds and layup for #1 hull has begun.
