Warpath for Andrew "Faster" Castan - Australia

marc created the topic: Warpath for Andrew "Faster" Castan - Australia

Here are a few pics of a Warpath rigger I'm building for Andrew. More will follow. I'm actually building a few at once, but one of these tubs is for Andrew's boat. :)

Interesting .... see your doing BALSA core on this build ?
Running change or is this customer requested over your usual foam of the past ?

I have been using balsa in the last few builds. Not much weight difference, only a few bucks more and seems to make a better sponson. Plus I've steered away from the epoxy for structural bonding and gone the Titebond route like Mr Ivan does and the bond is better between ply and balsa. I've done some test bonds with West Systems and Titebond and the Titebond wins in my book. Still use west to seal though and to put on the topdeck on the tub.

I'm also pinning the sponsons now in the area where the fin goes to reinforce that area. This can be seen in the build thread of the one I did for Dale Brobst "ZZ".

I do love how you 2 guys think :)

I like the fact you are using balsa instead of foam , i can see it making for a stronger and longer lasting sponson

i cant wait to run this rigger and i'm am very appreciative that you are building it for me Marc ,thank you :)

I'm still running my original that has foam core sponsons without issues. I`m still supplying kits with the foam. I think the foam is fine if you build with a good quality epoxy. I`ve had one of the early ones I built (Will Nichols`) come undone a little bit at the turn fin area and that prompted me to reinforce the sponsons as much as possible. Pinning should take care of that.

For the boats I personally build now though, I am going with the balsa simply for added piece of mind on my part and it works better with the Titebond.

Just got back from a weekend at the cottage. Got a little bit more done... Sorry about the color of the pics...shot with Blackberry.

Pic1: Gluing the oak nosepiece on the tub.
Pic2 and Pic3: All balsa done and sanded on sponsons...ready for sheeting.
