RE: Kit built Gas Fire fighter rigger ... Exotic

Scott created the topic: Kit built Gas Fire fighter rigger ... Exotic

Just sharing my winter project for 2010 ... a FF rigger with shingled and tunnel ride surfaces.

Powered by one of the new Korean RCMK rear x RZ-254 gassers, build was purpose built for it and to explore the pro's / con's of the ride surface mods that were the buzz a few years ago over at the Internatioal Waters nitro boat site ... so now I

test test test.

All the belly on trailing half was removed on ride surfaces of sponsons so the shingles first to last have a flat profile. Edges painstakingly kept sharp and square all around.
Ran the hull for the first time last Sunday and it ran very light on the water and launched effortlessly with props that did not cavitate excessively.
Boat showed promise but like all new builds will take some trial and error fine tuning to get it on rails and into the mid to upper 70's for oval race duty.

Thanks for looking, your comments are welcome :P

Regards,
Scott

Very interesting Scott. I'm actually building my own rigger as we speak...been working on it for a few weeks now. I was actually contemplating the shingled rid surface...I had never really seen anyone do it! I am doing several different sets of sponsons to test on the tub, one of them will have something incorporating shingled rid surface...probably not as many steps though. Keep us posted. I will start sharing pics of mine soon. It is a design that incorporates things I've seen and liked with several well known riggers out there. I hope it will run! ha ha!

Here a couple more pics of the wild sponsons .....

Marc,
Love to see builds that are not of the norn ... out of the box thinking if you will :dance2:
Do share when far enough along we can take a peek.

That's wild for sure! I won't get to test mine for another couple of months! :(

Very cool! About ten years ago recreational boats were using similar(not as aggressive)ways to reduce contact with water for reduced friction. The problem was in cornering the slots would suck the hull down. Some were so bad they would suddenly hook so the manufactures would put decals on dash telling operator to not turn boat at speed! Theses hulls were monos and not three point hulls. Does your your design have any turning issues?

On the maiden days outing last Sunday ran 4 - 250ml bags of fuel and hull showed no cornering issues or tendencies in wanting to hook or suck down.
Actually was surprised how well it did track going dead straight with zero rudder correction and went around the corners scrubbing very little speed while keeping it's self up on step.

After another couple hours run time finding prop & strut settings that settle down the hull into race attitude & trim .... the design just ROCKS !!
Spent a bit of time conversing with Jim Wilson at the Gary Johnson Memorial Gran Prix Classic who also just applied the design to his record setting sport 21 hull, we critiqued what each had done right or wrong coming up with further fine tuning ideas to fit each hulls needs.
One thing we both agreed on was the need for ALL edges to be very flat, crisp and sharp !! .... about 15-30* of backcut on shingles trailing edges is highly recommended.

More to follow if something worth mentioning comes to light.

Thanks for the update Scott. I'm off on vacation tomorrow, but when I get back I'm gonna get to work on a few different sets of sponsons for my rigger. The first set I made I decided to go traditional and just use regular ride pads. Will try some other stuff on the next sets... then it will be easy to compare them all by switching on the same tub. Should be interesting. :)
