Pipe and Header Wrap

marc created the topic: Pipe and Header Wrap

Has anyone experimented with this? I have recently ordered some and will be trying it out. My primary reason for using it is not really performance, but more to keep heat in the pipe (inside a crackerbox) to avoid the inside of the hull getting too hot. Keeping the heat in the pipe should theoretically help performance though. I am only a little bit concerned about how will it will go on and STAY on the pipe. I got the 1" wide tape with some SS ties.

On the race cars we used a product called "Firesleve" it is a woven tube made from a ceramic fiber with a hi temp silicone covering. It comes in several different sizes. We have used it for everything from brake and fuel lines to Header wrap and have been very happy with the results. Being that it is a tube it is much easier to install than messing with a tape type wrap. It should be available from any major speed equipment or industrial supply house. We bought it from the factory in large rolls for our shop. Since I retired and left the area I don't have the contact info. And YES it helps the performance of the exhaust system ,it just tunes a little different. Ed

Thanks for the info Ed. I agree, would be a lot simply to get on the pipe. I will see how this 1" wrap works out first, since I already have it on order. Will look for the sleeve type too.

Marc,
The hardest part s going to be getting it even on the pipe. We use it on our Karts and I have it on the headers of mu mustang. When you star make your 1st wrap and put a tie on it, then just continue down the pipe and make sure it stays tight an tie the other end. It should follow the contour of the pipe pretty good.

I have done it on my crackerbox pipe...it turned out pretty good but was a real pain to do! The pipe cone angles are steep and the wrap wants to slid off.. I managed to do the header up to the middle section of the pipe with 1" tape... For the stinger and back cone I had to cut the tape to 1/2" width. All in all it did a nice job. What I need now is something to hold the tape in place. I see some use silicone spray...I am considering some high temp clear silicone between the layers in some areas to secure the tape... any suggestions? Keeping it tight just is virtually impossible...vibrations loosen it up. Wouldn't take much to keep it all together though.

I have redone the pipe and header, this time using a thin coat of clear high temp silicone between the layers where the tape overlaps...so far so good. I will report back when I have sufficient run time on it. BTW, the wrap keeps the inside of the boat a lot cooler!

I just remembered that in the electrical trade 3-M Scotch makes a fiberglass hi temp tape the number escapes me now but it is available in several widths and has a heat set adhesive. We used it around the furnaces at the steel mill and had no problems with it. I also used it to make temporary repair to my old Porsche 914-6 heater boxes when I got caught in Yankee land one fall , it got me back to the sunny south just fine and it is still on there after 20+ years.
