McCulloch Engines.

Ozpulse created the topic: McCulloch Engines.

In an effort to get to know my powerplant for my first boat build better, I decided to do a complete teardown of the engine I picked up at the local recycling centre for $5 !! It starts and runs well as is, even sounded much better once I made a tuned pipe for it! Here is a pic. of the engine minus carb. pull start cover and exhaust. Any advice along the way from more experienced boaters will be gladly taken onboard.

Please excuse the quality of some of the photos as they were taken with my phone. Here is another pic. showing what I believe to be a fairly light flywheel, No fins etc. to be removed here.

As I get the engine further apart I am surprised to see the actual quality of it, all the intake, exhaust and transfer ports are very smooth and clean. Even the mating edges between the cyl. and crankcases have no over hang in the transfer ports. As can be seen in this pic. it runs a plastic fan in behind the alloy cover for cooling. it is also a twin port. There is a small amount of area in the crankcase for stuffing as you guys call it so this will be done prior to reassembling the engine.

This next pic. shows the cyl. head and twin ports, Not sure how well it will show the smoothness of them but there are no cast burrs to be seen anywhere inside this motor at all. Very surprising indeed! One thing I did notice was the thickness of the gasket between the head and the crankcase, it was one thick gasket! This will be left out on the rebuild and replaced with aircraft grade flange sealant.Hopefully raising the compression slightly!

Here we can see the obvious marking left by the piston skirt covering the transfer port area so this will also be removed and smoothed out prior to reassembly. The only thing I can see as far as the intake and exhaust ports are concerned is that the exhaust could be opened up in the bore area slightly and the itake port can be opened up easily as well.
