Grey coil question

Tar18 created the topic: Grey coil question

Hi folks:
I have noticed on my grey coils with the plug wire attached that the wire is breaking away from the coil itself. This has now happened on my two coils. They both are on the coil relocators. Is there a reason for this and how does one fix it?
Regards

Hi Tar,

This sometimes happens either from moving the plug wire a lot (removing and re-installing on plug) and/or because of the angle at which you sometimes have to mount the plug wire on the engine to clear the cowl. In some boats, the wire ends up being pulling sideways on the coil in order to get it positioned correctly for cowl clearance.

I guess you could try repairing it (if it's not pulled out completely) with either some epoxy or that brush on rubber coating they sell for tools. Would be best to make sure the coil is mounted with no stress on the wire if possible. CC Racing sell a new coil relocator bracket that doubles as a throttle bellcrank bracket. This might be an alternative also. One thing is for sure, if it pulls out completely, you most likely will have to replace the coil. :( Been there.

Never seen an issue NOT caused by set up.
Excessive wire tension, angle or abuse the likely cause IMO.

High tension wires do not fail unless tugged on, bent excessively or otherwise abused.

 Quite frankly thinking your relocation of coil is at the root of the cause.
