John, over lightening of the pin boss to skirt interface. The skirts themselves can be thinned considerably, but especially on the side where the access slot ( for the C clip ) is, there is no support left at the sides of the pin boss. I don't know if this lightening was done by the factory, or by someone post-factory. But the meat has to be left around the bosses.

The pin broke first. Once the pin breaks the piston could be solid and it would break it. The broken wrist pin is what leveraged the piston in half.

Broken piston pins are almost always a result a hydro locked engine at one time in the engines life either at time of catastrophic failure or even several bags before. It will always catch up with you.

Seen many broken piston pins and there were very few that didn't do the same thing to the piston.
