Where to start?

mephiskapheles6 created the topic: Where to start?

I will be putting a Zenoah G260 pum engine in my boat. Being new to the hobby, I was wondering what the first steps would be to become familiar with the engine and what are some of the entry level upgrades to said engine?

cheers,
corey

Take a look at a 35 cc Quick Draw first.

That's a good idea with one exception. They don't make the 35cc engine any more. I just ordered two new engines from them. I ordered a Pioneer 26 and a Pioneer 31.

I have their HT25 in a Y6 mono . That engine will have its 7th birthday in January, and I ran it for the first time yesterday. It's way faster than my Zenoah powered Y6 and the Pioneer engines are supposed to be faster than that.

I'm like a kid on his way to a candy store. I can hardly wait.

All the parts for the 35 can likely be purchased and assembled if need be. Thats alot of hull there and you need some power. As far as engine mods most benefit will been seen modding a QD. If you going to do a zenoah CC Racing does a nice unit. Doug at ESP seems to be getting them to run good as well.

Corey,
I am very sorry that some of my fellow MGB members just ignored your original questions and went off as usual away from the information you were looking for.
The Zenoah engines are very easy to run and require very little learning curve to get them to run correctly. Try to find some gas without ethanol and a non synthetic oil like Mercury Quicksilver and mix it at 8oz to a gallon of gas. Let us know what carb you have and we can give you some basic settings to get you going. Basic upgrades from stock would be a Billet Carb Block, Mandatory change to a NGK Plug and possibly a Copper Base Gasket.

If you have a larger sized boat and you have not purchased your engine yet, then I would recommend the Zenoah 300pum as it has more torque then the 260pum and would be better suited for a larger heavier boat.

Hope that helps
Carlo

Thnkx for the info.

I have already ordered the zen260, but was told I could put a different cylinder on it once I am comfortable with the engine to bump the cc's up to 29 or so.

I will be running the stock carb, I assume it comes with one but I mat be incorrect with that assumption.

Another question I have...I a clutch a good idea?

Corey,
That is a lot of boat. I have never actually seen a R/C boat built with the thicknesses of framework that it appears to have.
Maybe it is the picture but it does look like your doing a good job. It might take a lot of power to get it to speed.

You should have went for the 29.5 G300PUM but I realize it is late for that. It is correct that you can swap the 34mm for a 36mm cylinder later and also install a 1mm stroked crank if you wanted and it will be same as a 300.

Clutches aren't really necassary. You can crawl down to about as slow as 10mph which is as slow as you will ever need to go.

The carb on a factory equipped G260PUM is the 644 although many vendors equip them with a 257 thenselves and most end up sold with a 257 but if it was from the factory the choice was no carb or a 644.

Been awhile since I messed with a 644. Maybe like 1 1/2 low and 1 1/4 high for starters and a 257 2 low 1 high will be really close some do 2 1/8 low and 7/8 high or thereabouts.

Not to get off topic here, see my post in the build section regarding the build material and reasons I used said material.

I should get my zen in a week or two, I hope (but unlikely) to get her in the water this year and see how she does with the zen. Depending on the performance, I will re-evaluate my engine options.

I appreciate all the input.
