engine will not turn over

new2boats created the topic: engine will not turn over

I have a ops .67 engine and im having problems starting it. First the engine has not been started in some time. So when I try to start the engine it rotates fine and sounds like it wants to start, but it will not fire. Anther thing is that the gas tank was mounted higher than the motor under the hull should that matter. My boat is a 50" scarb.

new2boats,

I had a similar problem with my stock zenoah. It wouldnt start but just sort of spluttered for a couple of seconds. I checked the gauze filter in the carb which was pretty stuffed up. After a quick clean she fired up no problems.....engine had been run for 20 mins before the filter got clogged.

All the best,

Brandon

I haven't played with nitro boats in a very long time so I won't be of much help. Maybe better to post this on international waters forum. Have you checked that the glow plug is good and glow ignitor battery is lighting it up properly? Also, mounting the tanks higher than the carb is common with nitro engines as most of them do not have pumper carb like the gas engines. Typically there would also be a line from the tuned pipe body going into the tank to help pressurize it for better fuel flow to the carb. Set the needles as per manufacturer recommendations. Make sure the fuel pickup line and pressure line arent reversed.

Like Marc said, check your needle settings. Its been a while for me as well with nitro, but I had an OPS 67 that did some of the similar things. Usually turned out to be the low speed needle being too rich and making the plug too wet to fire. Try holding the throttle open a little more and see if the extra air will help. That will tell you if its too rich. Start with a known good plug, and also make sure that the starter is strong enough to turn it over, and that battery has enough juice too.

Thanks
Its nice to have help when your starting new hobbies. The engine did fire, and it happend to be a few of those suggestions. The needle was to open so it was getting the plug wet,and creating alot of compression in the engine. Also the battery charger i cranked over to 50a start which made a huge diffrence. Sweet she runs and sounds scary fast.
