What is it?

goesman created the topic: What is it?

I dug up a old engine today. Its a OLD chainsaw engine, i remember my brother had it running when i was a kid, then it just set around dads barn piled up with junk for years. Any way i am not familial with these old engines. I think its old enough that it has points if i can get the fly wheel off, it is a reed case. only thing i could find was this on the flywheel cover. Who knows maybe i will make a boat out of it for the heck of it. What is it?

Thanks,
Dan

ok, going to age myself having worked on quite a few of them :S

The 15's were McCulloch's entry level saw back in @ 1968/72 or so.
Even tho Mac made many versions of these 80cc motors, the 15 was a turd having just minimal ports drilled for transfer and exhaust flow, a flat reed plate with only 2 petals limited flow and rpm. Cranks only had a ball bearing on one side, roller/needle on the other. Fracture type rod with full compliment needle bearings. One piece head cast into block.

Not only that rotation direction is backwards from what we typically use.
HP likely sub 4 but pretty good torque.

Save your time and effort on this one .... keep it as a shelf queen chain saw :woohoo:

What do you mean by fracture type rod?

A fracture rod is where you take a one piece forged and hardened rod having preformed cap screw threads either side of big end journal, design also has built in V notchs 180* opposed on big end and under a a high pressure press with wedges into the v notchs FRACTURE the rods big end into two pieces. You grease up the cranks journal and lay side by side bearing needle against needle until surrounded. Place rod upon the needles then the other half broken away which matchs along it's fracture area. Tighten screws and big end of rod becomes a complete assembly again.
Crank is a one piece forging and not a 3 piece as we see these days in press together crank designs.
