Laser 40 power options

Bob DeCortin created the topic: Laser 40 power options

I know a few of you guys run Laser 40s, I have one that needs an engine and I have several options. I already have powered by a 20cc so I'm not considering that but looking at a 231 260 or J&G topend/zen crank case

A nice mod 26 is a blast in 40". You can run whatever u like. The 29.5 & 30.5 make it "edgey and hand full. Nice 26 and a Zipp pipe and you can play all day long

Use long single tabs - and small turn fin and you flying.

Hope things are good Mr. Bob

How fast do you want to go Bob? LOL

Of your listed options, the 260 V4 J&G. I'm sure you have your own set-up, but if you would like to PM me, that's cool.

Happy Spring!

Thanks for the input.
I started off thinking of just powering it and running it.
After spending an hour on the phone with Ron.I'm going to be using this as part of an experiment to compare the 20cc to the 231.
So I'm going to start with with a stock 231.

Speed wise I rather have a boat that runs reliably and doesn't need to be picked up/retrieved every time its launched than the last few mph.

Cool idea

Laser 40 if u need actual on water running tips you can just post here Bob - no real secret to how to make 40 run descent. I'll help if I can but only have about 250+ runs on the few I have had.

I have some video's if it helps you any.

Randy

How did it run with 20 was it 20EI? Any video or build pic there Mr. Bob ?

I'm open to any tips or ideas.
We're getting back to running boats again this year after a hiatus. Unfortunately most of my pics are on my old computer that had a hard drive problem~so I have basically nothing.
We're going to attempt video this year. As far as build photo documentation, I doubt I'll bother to redo the photos I did take. Its a lot of work to do a "build" photo series,I don't have the time or the interest in doing that.
Yes, its a 20 EI I converted to marine back in '07.I ran out of time before fully developing the engine, pipe and prop package.Life happens and shelved my rc projects in late '09.
It wasn't impressive but showed promise.I may never hit 60 with it.

My "how fast" comment was just for fun Bob.
We didn't run any cats last season at all, just my 25.4 and Peter's 30.5 Pioneer in the L40s. The guys in the club that actually run with us, can tell ya that our boats almost always come back in under power. My 25.4 is the "ol reliable" that we throw in when we just want to mess around. I can prop up for some blasts, or stick an oval prop on to carve a few turns.
There's no magic or secret to perfect control of these boats, it's just physics. And when you power up these little hulls, they can become dicey or a solid runner. With any kind of reasonable water, full throttle turning can be like carving butter.
The 231 will be a great fit for your hull, and you will have a good time with it.

I hear ya on the fast comment, I just wish I could give you a number. I never ran it with a tach or gps.
The 231 won't be a problem.
Stock 231 vs stock 20 is going to be interesting.

Being that the 231 is actually 22.5ccs., there is probably just going to be an increased torque reaction over the 20. Able to turn a little more blade. It shouldn't upset the hull at all. I don't know if you have a hatch, but they look pretty cool with one as well. Peter will be trying his little bomb with the hatch this year to see if it hurts high speed stability.
