There is nothing any more accurate or useful as a GPS that gives you thousands of speed readings for every inch of they way around the course.

Lets you see your corner speed and straightaway speeds.

Daniel
Doesn't that have a top speed of 60 mph ?

The new Voltron has same features I think (Goggle Earth down loadable tracking and way point info) and max speed is like 600 mph

I haven't seen them for sale yet - soon I hope - looks good - I;m happy with V2 model

A speed trap surveyed by a civil engineer with a transit & electronic timing equipment, either active infared or a laser, is the most accurate system available. You don't need to ask, I have a working system in my possession that has a range of more than 2000 ft. When the laser's beam leaves the laser it is approximately 1/8" in diameter. At 2000 ft, it is approximately 9" in diameter. Collimation of the receiver makes it possible for the receiver to see only a 1.5" diameter of the transmitted beam. Since the receiver recognizes only a pulsed beam, a DC motor powered rotating shutter makes the continuous laser beam pulse at approximately, a burst of energy every 600 micro seconds. Four 1 1/2" galvanized poles can be permanently set at the lake's edges to facilitate quick setup of the system. I also have a digital calibrated clock that reads in hundredths of a second & converts the time to MPH. The system can also be used for accurate oval timing.

Sounds similar to how a rotary encoder uses squarewave pulses for keeping track of rotation speed. Anyway, starting to get a bit too technical for my narrow attention span.
Those Voltron/HK loggers look like they'd fit into a radio box compartment? I'm at work and have a really poor servive connection so can't watch Danielplaces embedded vid. What device is that interface screen snapshot taken from?

Daniel is talking about Garmin® Forerunner 310XT

The Voltron can be Powered from your receiver battery or BEC is very small maybe 1" wide 3" long and 3/8" thick I've seen and used them inside radio boxes before

Cheers

I just upgraded to the Garmin ForeTrex 301. More compact and larger display screen for top speed.

Most of the time, especially for beginners, the maximum speed and maximum rpm is plenty of information. We developed our record holding (still) gas rigger with those tools plus a radar gun. The GPS peak speed lagged the radar gun speed by 1 or 2 mph at 100 mph in these very quick boats. I doubt that this would be an issue for around the buoys speeds in normal boats, especially with fast update GPS units.

Data loggers can give you a lot more information once you get past the steep learning curve. If you are not venturing into uncharted territory, asking fellow modelers for advice is a lot more satisfactory. We've run Eagle Tree data loggers since they were first made. They are helpful, but not essential. Below are some examples of the possible data plots..

999 mph is the top speed. That is real speed not scale. It ought to be enough for most of our boats. Lol.
