Pipe paint???

g force hydros created the topic: Pipe paint???

I have always used either flat black car header paint or B.B.Q. hi temp paint. I want to repaint a pipe and noticed the paint that is on it seams smoother, harder and has more sheem to it than what I have used in the past. I know some guys bake it in the oven to harden it up, but my wife would whing my neck if she cought me with a used oil filled pipe stinking up her oven. Is there a better way and type of paint out there to do this with?

Bob. After painting with BBQ/heat paint, bake it in the oven for 30 min. Let cool and then wipe with a cloth. The pipe will have a semi gloss look. The pipe comes out looking like new.

I use oven too - but 'reduce wife killing me' by using a toaster oven I bought at a yard sale for few bucks - most have timers - just plug in outside

That is a good idea, about a old toaster oven. If it was a new pipe the oven in the house would not be a problem. But this is a used pipe with oil in it, and I don't want my next cake to taste like two stroke oil! I'm not that much of a motor-head.

I have used VHT brand paint, and it works well. It is for brake calipers. 900F You can buy the spray cans of it at Auto Zone.

I use the VHT header paint also which is rated at 1300--2000* F. I bake it according to the instructions in my heat treating oven. Stands up to both gas & high nitro fuels. Tuned pipes are sand blasted & cleaned with acetone before spraying.

It really doesn't matter what paint you chose you will never get paint to stay on a gas pipe.

It is a endless struggle to keep it rust free and looking good.

Especially if it is in the hull where it isn't even possible to wipe down with oil at days end.

For the price of ceramic it just makes sense to have the pipe coated professionally with products specifically designed for use on exhaust systems.

"It really doesn't matter what paint you chose you will never get paint to stay on a gas pipe." If the VHT paint used on full size gas engine headers is properly cured, it will stay on!
