Sponsons

Rebuilding a gas rigger and the sponsons with it are stepped Looking at pix of various riggers the majority seem to have non-stepped sponsons. What's the design criteria ie. step or no step? Input appreciated.

When I was building riggers I never used steps or ride pads. When I cut the foam on the bandsaw I set the table at 1 degree for the bottom cut on the sponson. That made the right amount of dihedral in it. When the boat is going past you if you look close you can see the outside of the sponson is not in the water.

Are you just mixing graphite powder with the epoxy and where are you buying it? Think you.

Taking into account the SGX riggers are some of the best boats around I vote yes for step. I have done some basic work on steps for my Gas Whiplash and it seems to help.

Thanks everybody for the info. I used to run tethered hydros and people seemed split on stops or not. On the gas rigger I'm restoring/upgrading the sponsons are stepped so I think I'll slim 'em down a bit, improve the finish and go for Jim's graphite deal for ride pads.

I raced tethered hydros in the UK which is where I live. From here it looked like it had died out in the US but I did race a Harry Trabant "Baby" in vintage with a red head McCoy 29. Also had a sparky 29 but had to go when the race budget nose dived through the pain barrier!
