I'm looking to get a camcorder
anyone familiar with Sony 30X, is 30 power strong enough for good pics at the races?

My 25 X was in my top pocket and I went to pull a boat out of the water and Yep. She fell into the pond. I dried it out in rice for a few days. And she still works. Thankfully. Just keep away from the water and you'll be OK

30x zoom should get you across the pond with no trouble as usually anything more will make the camera very sensitive to any shaking at all.

I agree with Ronald.

The Sony CX115E cam corder that I got a year ago has 25x optical zoom and its Carl Zeiss lens is superb. At full zoom the camera is more capable than my hands holding it.

Best of all for me is the multitude of options that came with my Sony Cam Corder. Pop the SD card in your HD TV and you've got professional footage of your clips with stereo sound. Use the Sony software to edit the clips and that is ideal for uploading to you tube if wanted.

And you have the option with the Sony software to lift static photos from any of your movie clips and they are of decent resolution and quality.

Here's the rest of the story.
Got it, but my apple computer wouldn't talk to it. What a hastle, went to a couple forums & apple it's self.
Finally tried some program that wasn't supposed to work.
Bingo
It was on a two day sale for $499, when I got there, that days price was $409.
Great camera & the michrophone will pick up a fly fart!

Sony stuff takes some beating I think.

It gets really good when you start exploiting the functions of the cam corder and its software etc. Enjoy!
