f41 Styker running slow or is this normal speed?

aminoacid created the topic: f41 Styker running slow or is this normal speed?

I finished redoing my f41, acquired it in nonrunning condition. painted the hull with air gun/automotive finish, new stuffing tube, rebuilt carb and new electronics.

My question is, please check out my youtube video and from your experience is this running at respectable speeds for the specs i will provide?
old ass g23 zenoah with a 167A walbro carb,
tuned pipe,
prather 270 prop. it had a 265 i think but that came off during the first run due to no locktight on prop nut.
check out the video----> VIDEO

Sounds to me like you're overloaded with prop. It probably had a 265 on it for a good reason.

Was thinking what Steve said myself. You could try raising the strut slightly (careful with the angle - keep that as it is)to gain some RPM with the 270. Go in 1/16 inch increments, but be careful to not over-do it, or you'll stress the motor with too many RPMS. What's your header length and is the carb clean? Check to make sure you're getting WOT (Wide Open Throttle), I've had a few that once they get out there I find that they dont get to WOT. Check that it gets to the stop, and use the trim to back it down a few clicks. That will keep the carb shaft the butterfly sits on from getting over rotated and twisting. Nothing like having a motor that will only return to idle and not shut down to deal with!

so theres that much diff between 270 and 265 props?

i'll try raising the strut a bit and see what happens. i believe i have WOT, the carb was rebuilt with new diaphram and cleaned it well. when i did the initial tuning i got to max rpm's with high speed needle then messed a bit with the low speed at about half throttle until it starts to 4 stroke...runs fine it seems. i guess i'm not getting enough rooster tail so what you guys are saying makes complete sense. i'll run my gas a little richer with oil if i'm going to raise that strut a bit to give the extra lube maybe?

thanks for you guys help. i'll keep you posted. So i can conclude that this stryker should be running much faster than i have it now in the video? the g23 engine is stock i believe since that 167A carb is the stock one for those engines

I'm not convinced you are gonna get much more outta the stock G230, just not much power in those. This video was my 36" cat with stock 230, Hanson 0 band exhaust, and 6717/3 prop. Didn't have GPS then but it was probably a 40 mph boat at best.

This is the same cat with a stock RCMK Evo, Jeroen quiet pipe, and 2716/2 prop. Now its a 60 mph boat. About 10+mph came from upgrading to RCMK motor, another nearly 10 mph due to 2716/2 prop (no kidding)

bh_trade.

WOW! Impressing what a smaller prop can do!
For my 56" wooden mono (yeah - still in build) I have two counter rotating 7018/3 SS from Prop Shop to mount on a couple of Arrow Shark sterndrives. But I'm beginning to wonder if that is an "overkill" - even with a 14 hp Blata engine and a gearbox pushing rpms to about 27.000 at each prop. (In theory, that is).

Cheers! :cheer:

Post some pictures of the setup please. Engine and pipe as well as some good transom shots, level from side and rear views. With a good g-23 there is no reason not to be close to 50mph. Looks like its doing 30s max.

Another thing to look into is how long is the header into the pipe. Even if you shorten the distance, without cutting the header down, it sticks further inside and you're losing performance via the design of the pipe cones and it is not "coming on the pipe" like it should.

I too would like to see more pics of the setup like Marc asked. Your boat is definitely a slug! You have no doubt a bunch of things that could be changed to get you up to speed. The 0ld 230's were famous for revving to the moon! A Bob Austin 6516/3, 350 pitch prop would be on my list right off. Raise your strut as high as you can get it to go and see what happens. Don't worry about "stressing" the motor! These motors are purpose built boat engines made to rev as high as they can. If the prop just spins and won't move the boat, lower the strut in 1/8" increments until she works better. Are you running a wrap to center header? That would also need to go away for a 100* header. For now, post more pics of the setup showing everything! We're shooting blind without them. Now get busy with the camera! Brian :)
