Is this a Shaft oiler

boostoman created the topic: Is this a Shaft oiler

I have ordered a boat from SDShobby.com Blade 26cc

I have just looked at the drive shaft and I noticed a threaded bolt with a hole in it that connects to the brass shaft sleeve but there isn't any hole on the brass sleeve. can someone help me to understand what is this for? is this a oiling location? I posted pics with details

and can I used this item and place oil in it?

That is a shaft greaser actually. You drill through the stuffing tube once installed. Use a small grease gun with needle on end to grease the shaft. If you want to use an actual oiler, you can remove that brass insert and thread on a nipple to mate to an external oiler, either remotely located, or as some I've seen, mounted directly on t-bar. :)

* some struts and drives have this same type of grease opening in them, usually located on the top of barrel.

Here is an example of the grease gun. www.walmart.com/ip/Astro-Pneum...Nozzle/16487579

thanks for the info Marc.

by the way do you think the oil reservoir is a good option especially since i will be using my boat in salt water all the time. of should I just stick to the grease gun option?

I dont think it would be better or worse either way, more of a personal preference thing. I still grease all my shafts by hand after a day's running. I like to take that opportunity to inspect the cables and catch possible issues with the cables before failures occur and I lose a $100 prop. :) I think the oil or grease hole is ok for maintaining shaft lubrication during a day's running/racing, but cables should nonetheless still be inspected after each day running. Just my opinion on the matter.

FTR I use cable grease sold by RC Boat Parts ( I get it from CC Racing). It's easily god for a whole day of racing without having to re-grease between heats, so for me, the oilers really are of no use. I kind of like that grease hole though. That I would probably use just to be on the safe side!
