outriggers

JoeB created the topic: outriggers

I would apprciate advice on getting into outriggers. I would like to know what the concensus is on whether to start with a small (.21-.45) nitro outrigger or to go ahead and invest in a gas powered outrigger.

All riggers are fun. I guess it all depends on where you run and what kind of experience you have. I've done both nitro and gas boats, and have to say if you're on your own and don't have much experience with nitro engines, I would go gas if not only for ease of use. Also the size of the pond/lake you're running on might influence your decision a lot. Larger gas boats or big nitros typically will handle rougher conditions that the smaller nitros. Budget also might come into play. These days really, gas boats are pretty easy to get at reasonable prices. Fuel cost is something else to consider I guess and the cost of gas is still less than nitro.

Thank you Marc. I am a beginning boater but fairly experienced builder and modeler. I am still hunting for a place to boat but have a few choices and they are all fairly large.

No eBay APP ID défined in Kunena configurationWell, if you decide to go gas, I have a nice Warpath rigger kit on Ebay right now... at that price it's hard to beat if you have basic building skills. It's a good running little rigger!

Hey Marc!

For a moment I thought that you suddenly were hit by a case of modesty  , so I was just about recommending the fabolous Warpath Rigger. B)
But you did it first!

Anyway my recommendation is to buy and build this rigger. Marc designed it and cuts the parts ready for assembly.
It seems to run (and sell) very fine and very fast, and I suspect that it soon will set a new standard amongst the riggers.
(But who am I to know? I'm just a "mono-guy")

Cheers! :cheer:
Woodie.

Thank you both (Marc and Woodie). I will certainly be looking the warpath up on ebay. but setting up a gas rigger, and a large one to boot, is no more difficult than a smaller fuelie?

Not really, aside from size, the basics are pretty much the same. Speeds can be quite comparable too if you go with say a .45 or bigger, they are very fast. The main factor (for me anyway) is the ease of use of the gas engines as opposed to nitros. Nitros are good, but there is a learning curve there, much more so than gas, and a simple mistake like leaning out the engine a bit too much can quickly become very costly. Just my opinion. I've been there, boating alone with nitros for many years before switching to gas, and believe me it was difficult. If you have fellow nitro boaters around to help you out however, well then that's a whole different story! :)
