rudder questions

dazzido created the topic: rudder questions

Hi all my zenoah powered mono turns ok right but not so good to the left, the rudder is right mounted looking from rear of boat like most are.If the boat was used for racing i would,nt mind cause believe courses run right but i use it just for pleasure so need it to turn both ways really. Also whilst on the subject of rudders how far below say the flexshaft prop retaining nut measured from the centre should the rudder be below the water because i think this is why its not turning so good left cos the rudder is been lifted nearly out of the water. Thanks in advance for your excellent advice. Darren :) P.S. got a 35" x 12" speedboat hull on order and hopeing my OS20 nitro will power it,if not any advice on a suitable powerplant?

On my heat race monos I keep the rudder full length and usually will have about 3" under the drive (or about 8cm). This is not unwanted for racing as it gives positive steering and also helps keep the nose of the boat down. They do turn left well enough, but if I want them to do so, I will usually mount a left side turn fin. It will never turn as well left as right though with the rudder mounted on the right (starboard) side. So in the end if you REALLY want left/right equally, you will most likely have to mount the rudder in the center behind the prop. If you can live with having it on the right though, typically you'll get better overall performance at the cost of a little less left turning ability. :)
