Gas tank?

Woodie created the topic: Gas tank?

Does anyone know where to buy a gas tank in hard plastic? In my boat there is no space for a "flat" tank. It must stand "upright" across the boat right in front of the engine. Size about 1 liter (more or less).
As I live in Europe, I would prefer a tank, that can be delivered within Europe. (Taxes).
If no "hard" tanks can be found, I will be interested in the so called IV tanks.

Cheers! :cheer:

I went to Dr Buck bags like Scott suggested and they are great ......

CC Racing has a selection of hard tanks here: www.cc-racingengines.com/index...id=18&Itemid=53

Maybe something in there that could work for your application? Warehouse Hobbies also has some different shaped ones.

As for the Buck bags, not sure if they've changed over the years, but I used some of the first ones they made (look the same) and they all ended up leaking where the tubing is welded into the bag. Was a real P.I.T.A. I've since changed back to the good old reliable Baxter I.V. bags. Can't seem to go wrong with those! CC Racing has them as well as many other suppliers.

Thanks to Canadian and Marc.

Thanks for your efforts. I will look closer to the sites you refer to.

In my case I need a compact tank to put into a space of 70 x 200 x 170 mm (standing upright) in a closed compartment in front of the engine.
So far I have found the "TET4035" that is made for RC-planes. It contains about 580 cc of gas. It takes up 70 mm on the "flat" side - excactly as wanted, and now I wonder if I could set up two of those side-by-side with a divided gas intake? Just to reach one litre of gas in all?
You can see it here:
www.centralhobbies.com/fuel/fueltnk.html

About the IV-bags, I am getting unsure, as I think these have to lie flat in the boat in order to deliver gas untill empty, and I really don't have the space for that.

Please give me your opinion.

Post a picture of the boat here if you can in this post. Showing the compartment clearly where the tank is to go. I'd like to see.

Hi Marc.

The compartment is not all done yet. You must imagine a new "wall" right at the front of the motor. This will leave 70 mm space forwards to the next wall, which is shown on this picture.

So you must imagine one or two upright standing tanks, that excactly fills out this space - of course with tanking lids upwards, and a "clunk" fuel intake with filter to the bottoms on both.

Cheers! :cheer:

I would suggest cutting out the forward bulkhead enough to let a tank or I.V. bag slide in there and lay flat on the bottom of the hull. Would keep your CG down much lower and would allow the use of many readily available tanks/bags. Just my opinion. :)

I tend to agree with Marc but if I had too

I'd just install a deeper pickup tube in the IV type bag (to the bottom) and hang the bag right side up

or

just hang the bag upside down ......will always drain might be a pain to get air out though

Marc and Canadian.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am not sure if I want to "break down the wall" to the front compartment, as this should be the absolutely waterproof "insurance" for the boat not to join the fishes together with my precious blata.
About the IV-bag. I'm still not sure. Remember that I'm all new to this.
Right now I think I'll continue searching the Net for some hard tank, that could fit into this limited space.
But still: Any idea is very welcome! :)

It's actually much better to have all bulkheads open for water to get in and more importantly GET OUT of the hull. No matter how hard you try, water will always get in there, and if you sealed it, it creeps in, but takes forever to get out or dry out and ends up rotting out your wood hull. Keep bulkheads open and seal ALL the wood carefully with epoxy as you build. It's the ONLY way to build a long lasting wood hull. Trust me on this! For floatation, just put in pool noodles. It's also a good idea to have them in areas where they can be replaced if need be. Because believe it or not the foam actually soaks up water over time too!

This would make your gas tank problem go away and also make your hull much better for the long run. :)
