Strenght in a wooden boat.

Woodie created the topic: Strenght in a wooden boat.

I am building an all wooden 56" mono, all glued together with PU (polurethane glue).
This works fine so far.
My intention is to set it up with a 14 hp 40 cc Blata engine (I know: It's an overkill). Sure thing, is that this engine will make some violent vibrations.
I will put epoxy on both inside and outside of the boat in order to seal it, make it waterproof and to strengthen the construction.

So the question is: Should i support the spants/profiles on the inside with some glassfibre like some sort of band/or tape about 2" wide?
If so, I would like to know if I have to use polyester with hardener, or if it is possible to purchase as some sort of "self-adhesive" to stick right on to the epoxy.
Can anybody help me out with some advice?

Cheers! :cheer:

Im using glass tape 2" wide, this can be used with epoxy or polyester resin!
Do it like you would do any other fibreglassing job, just with the epoxy you are using! ;)

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

Thanks Oz.

That seems to be simple to do.
Main question is: Is it nessecary (at all) on a boat glued with PU and covered inside-out with epoxy?
What's your experience?

Cheers! :cheer:

If it were me I would do it! ;)
It really is a must if you ask me, especially since you will be offshore running.
Thats a lot of pounding and the seams will end up seperating!

Oz.

I hear you, and I will do so.
Absolutely!
Don't want to see my sweet "kat killer" desintegrate at a speed above 100 kmh :(
(I would NEVER stop crying)!

Thanks.

Het Woodie, I let ya cry on my shoulder!!! ;) I agree with Oz 100% on this one, and make sure to mount the motor with rubber insulators also!!! That will eliminate alot of the vibration before it even gets to the hull!!! B)
