Homemade Strut

marc created the topic: Homemade Strut

I did use my homemade milling machine to make this part and also my small lathe for 1 step, but this could all be done with a press-drill and a few endmills. Alot of the steps can actually be done by hand if you don't have the mill/drill/lathe. It really does take a bit of time and work though, even with all the tools.

Starting the rough material removal. I sketched a VERY rough outline of the strut profile on the block of aluminum. :)

Used a flycutter to thin the blade section down.

I used a tapered end mill to sharpen the blade area.

Made a little mandrel (actually just a shaft, spacer and nut) to hold the strut in the lathe and spin it on it's axis to machine the front cone section.

Cleaned up the bottom of the blade to barrel junction a bit with an endmill.
