New carbon fiber Gas Scale / Thunderboat

keno created the topic: New carbon fiber Gas Scale / Thunderboat

B) I built a wood Gas scale hull last year and I did pretty well with it so I decided to make molds from it over the winter. The hull fits the Thunderboat class and fits all of the 102 and 103 Newton marine plans for the scale hulls. I made the molds so I could do either the pointed or round nose using just a rubber insert. The parts are resin infused using vinylester resin. 2 layers of 5.7 oz cloth with honeycomb core in the top deck. I put 3 layers in the bottom with the honeycomb in the bottom of the sponsons and center section.

Layup.

Infusion

first day on the water.

Yes, I made the molds so that it will fit the thunderboat class and a bunch of the gas scale hulls. I can do either the pointed nose or the round nose. The round nose is 54 in. The pointed nose is 55. Its 24 1/16 wide. The hull comes in at about 7 to 8 lbs with cowl. Should get some video this weekend in race trim.

Starting on another hull. This one is for a member here. This is the top deck. Should bag it up tonight and infuse it Friday at the latest.

So I've gotten 2 top decks done and 1 bottom done last night. I started pulling the peel ply off this morning before I headed to work. Looks like it turned out well so far.

bottom is out of the mold and it came out really good, I'm happy. I weighed both parts (not trimmed) and it weighs 6 lbs 2.6 oz. Trimmed and glued together should be about 6 lbs. FYI: the white lines you see on the inside of the part is from the different pieces of peel ply that was removed. The peel ply gives it the textured finish that is easy to bond to.

Started assembly of Joes boat this weekend. Got the parts trimmed, got the glue flanges on and the engine rails layed up. Also 2 pictures of my finished 1959 Maverick. I finally got it painted and took it to the NW Scale championships in Seattle Oct 8-9. The boat performed very well but other gremlins kept popping up. Blew off a water line once, had a radio malfunction once and a coil wire broke.
