Hardwood dowels going through the two 1/4 plywood sponson formers...the threaded inserts (for the turn fin) are then screwed into the dowel with epoxy. Gonna be doing them all like this from now on... much stronger than just through the outer 1/4" ply. :)

Instead if the hardwood dowels, wouldn't it be better to epoxy a piece of 3/8 steel with the same hole pattern or steel inserts with the same thread, or even steel T-NUTS with the same thread. I would be afraid the hardwood plugs would pull out or fail. Wood under that kind of stress, especially end grain, would scare me. Assuming you use 10-32 screws for this, take a look at McMaster part number 90598A015.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you how to build your boats. Just making a suggestion.

I don't like the plate or t-nuts... Was doing t-nuts in the beginning. The inserts are easy to put in at any stage of the build plus they can be replaced if ever it's needed. They are brass so they won't lockup like stainless can. I've locked up t-nuts before....not fun when the nut is inside the sponson!

The brass inserts have been working pretty good so far even when just in the ply but some of the faster riggers running a test fin have started putting much more stress on the inserts and plywood. The idea here is to tie in the outer 1/4 former, the core material, and the inner 1/4" former...all together holding these large dowels, which in turn have the inserts screwed in them. All epoxied together. Destructive tests have proven this to be pretty darn strong so I will go with it for some real life testing. We will see.

T-nuts or a plate inside are still just pulling on the outer single 1/4" ply. I think the plate would be better than the t-nuts. If I were to use a plate I would make it long enough to span both sponson pins. That would be pretty strong. I'm not going that route though...not now anyway. I think the inserts in the dowels will serve their purpose. Plus we will be adding a turn fin brace going to the tub.

Marc,
this is awesome! I knew when I sent the bottom ends to Antron and Tony that they will need a new rigger design. If you need a carbon strut for this baby, just let me know. I have them here, just need to get the propshafts from MTC.

I have also a new twin bottom end here. MTC made me the stroker cranks for it. So that shoud be a perfect engine for that rigger.

So if you found the time anywhere this year, please accept my order for such a rigger.

Great work!!!

Thanks Andre. I still have that carbon strut you gave me in Celina...I assume it's the same thing? I also still have the shaft assembly you gave me in New Orleans...have to see if they work together...who knows I might build one of these for myself! :)

Anyway, when I get caught up i plan on building a few more of these twins so I will keep one for you if you still want it.

Someone else mentioned a while back they might want one, I think it was Ron...so I will make a few. :)

This one is getting carbon fiber booms as per Antron's request. I epoxied in a short piece of aluminum tubing the prevent crushing where the mounting bolts go. Prepping and installing the tubes so far I think have been the most time consuming part of the build! Antron asked for the tubes to go all the way to the sponsons and cover the aluminum sponson pins so they have to be trimmed to the perfect length to allow for the diff toe-in on both sides. Not all that bad really but it was the first time I did them this way so there was a lot of test fit and measure before cutting. Don't want to waste $50 of carbon tubing! :)

Also finishing up the sponsons with the ride pads being added. All that's left now is to make and install the sponson pins and the lexan covers and I should be good to seal up all the outside and do a test fit of everything. :)
