CY engines (Chung Yang CY26 Gas) who has some feedback?

lohring replied the topic: Re:CY engines (Chung Yang CY26 Gas) who has some feedback?

Water in the intake will wreck any engine. Though the Chung Yang would be a better engine with four bolts, that won't save it if you splash water in the intake. Though I have not tested the stock 26cc Chung Yang, I would expect it to be slightly more powerful than the Zenoah out of the box because it has a higher exhaust and lower head clearance. This is not a consideration if you modify the engine, but the Chung Yang might only need a thinner copper base gasket and raised intake and exhaust timing to be competitive. A lightened piston would help as well. The Zenoah additionally needs the transfers raised by the amount you took off the cylinder base to get a tight head clearance, a much tougher job.

We just tested the Chung Yang 27 in our old SAW rigger. I predict a new NAMBA G2 record by a huge margin, especially since the old record is 72 mph.

Mike Bontoft drove his SAW rigger to a 103+ mph two way average today. That is about the same as his GX2 record with a CMB 35 and the 106 one way pass is close to his 110 mph pass with a Quickdraw. All this with a modified Chung Yang 27. This is the first time a NAMBA G class engine has set a record over 100 mph

Congrats to Mike ...

Doing that with a POS 2 bolt CY cylinder is just not right :S

The CY has its falts, but my first experience with one has been mostly good. It's really all about what modifications need to be done. I think it may be a better high end engine than our G1 engine. We'll find out today.

I'd get rid of the stock base gasket and run a thinner copper one available from Carlo at CC Racing. That gives you an engine with the right head clearance and transfer timing for heat racing. Then all you need to do is play with the exhaust and intake timing to get a great G2 engine. With piston lightening and rear transfer modifications, I bet it will equal a similar Zenoah. As a stock engine, however, the two bolt cylinder is a handicap.

I'll chime in here... I've run a CY 26 for a year and a half of racing and it has held up pretty well, though I did replace one cylinder that cracked right after it was running its fastest ever GPS'ed speed... around 56.8 in my mono. I run an older Aeromarine Challenger 48 Deep Vee mono and have received a lot of flack over that hull ...not to mention the fact that I also have a clutch in it. When I first met people who saw my boat running (I like the scale look) , they were like get rid of that unstable POS , lol. But I eventually got it tamed down and more competitive to the point where guys couldn't believe how well it runs with the CY in it. I do think the 2-bolt is a weak-spot , but I replaced my gasket with a copper one from the very start, always use loctite and never had any blowouts.
Incidentally Lohring, didn't realize you guys were running a CY27 at the SAW. I tried out several thicknesses of gaskets ..tested by my local engine guru ...and the engine actually preferred the thicker one (same as stock or slightly thicker) to the thinner ones , for some reason.
The reason I bought the CY26 in the first place was because I mistakenly thought I'd be able to run in a stock mono class and have an advantage over a stock Zenoah . I obviously didn't know that class really didn't exist in NAMBA monos, save for rookie canister class, whose engines can still be modded.

All in all, mine has been pretty reliable, is usually easy to start, provides good upgraded power right out of the box and comes with mounts and throttle lever to save you some $$. That being said , I have a modified Zenoah in my Hydro which has greater speed and RPM with good reliability and I am looking forward to getting my hands on one of CC Racing's powerplants in the near future! No eBay APP ID défined in Kunena configurationLots of better clutches out there than Arrow Shark (even Arrow Shark no longer makes the one in picture) - put any power to them and kiss the springs good bye - also the 'tinning sound' made by that clutch and the Proboat drives u crazy.

Go with RCMK or Bonzi or Ware house Hobbie -- all are better than one in picture (I have had 3 of one's in picture - not one lasted more than few hours

The Bonzi I have used for couple years - no issues

New Arrow Shark (still wouldn't use it myself)

Bonzi (best I have used) - by FAR the Best from personal use - nice and compact

Warehouse Hobbies - good at reasonable prices - great service

RCMK I have not used it yet but hear good things about them

Just my 2 cents
(after 12 years of clutches - maybe 10 clutches in total)
